Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, with Ubuntu being widely utilized in various enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. As the world's most popular Linux on cloud and bare metal, Ubuntu Server is at the forefront of this technology shift. In this role, you will manage a team responsible for delivering the Ubuntu Server Distribution.

You will be part of a pioneering company that champions global distributed collaboration with over 1200 colleagues across 75+ countries, working predominantly in remote roles. The company meets in person two to four times a year to align on strategy and execution, while remaining focused on the needs of large, innovative customers.

This position is suited for a leader who is passionate about building strong teams and fostering an open source culture. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Building and leading a globally distributed team of engineers.
  • Developing talent through coaching, mentoring, feedback, and hands-on career development.
  • Collaborating with Product Management to define the vision and strategy for Ubuntu.
  • Setting and managing expectations with other teams and stakeholders.
  • Advocating and advancing agile software development practices.
  • Contributing to a healthy engineering culture aligned with company values.
  • Engaging with the open-source community and overseeing the quality of the Ubuntu Server image family.

Requirements:

  • Proven track record in developing and growing people.
  • Strong knowledge and passion for software development.
  • 3+ years of experience leading and managing software developers; experience with distributed teams is a plus.
  • Focus on delivering high-quality software in an agile environment.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or similar field.
  • Strong written and verbal technical communication skills in English.
  • Experience with a modern GNU/Linux distribution, preferably Debian or Ubuntu.
  • Practical experience with at least one of Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, or Amazon Web Services.
