Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We are hiring a Security Engineer to join an industry-leading software security team, protecting the open source community and Ubuntu users from emerging threats.

As part of the Ubuntu team, you will monitor, triage, respond to, and document vulnerabilities in open source software. The role will involve collaboration with internal teams and external partners to identify, prioritize issues, and track progress. Additional responsibilities include security assessment, code review, tooling development, community engagement, security hardening, feature development, and collaboration with industry. This role requires international travel several times a year (usually for one week) and the ability to work effectively in a distributed team through self-discipline and motivation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze, fix, and test vulnerabilities in Ubuntu packages.
  • Track vulnerabilities in Ubuntu releases using internal software tools.
  • Collaborate with the Ubuntu community and upstream developers to develop vulnerability patches.
  • Audit source code for vulnerabilities.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Thorough understanding of common categories of security vulnerabilities and techniques for fixing them.
  • Familiarity with coordinated disclosure practices and open source development tools.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages: C, Python, Go, Rust, Java, Ruby, or PHP.
  • Excellent logic, problem-solving, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members and the Ubuntu community.
  • Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
  • Strong interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability.
  • Appreciation for diversity and effectiveness in a multi-cultural organization.
  • Result-oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments.

Work Conditions:

  • Distributed work environment with twice-yearly team sprints in person.
  • International travel required.

Language Requirements:

  • Proficient in English (additional languages may be a plus).
