About the job
Join the Automation Team at B&R, a member of the ABB Group, and drive the transformation of society and industry towards a more productive and sustainable future. At B&R, we promote diversity and inclusion in all areas—regardless of age, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, or disability. We support individual differences—both personally and collectively.

As a Senior Manager for Software Development at B&R, you will lead a large team of Product Owners, Technical Leads, and Software Developers/Testers, responsible for the development and delivery of multiple software components within the B&R software portfolio. Leveraging your extensive knowledge and experience with agile software development methodologies and modern technology stacks, you will support our teams in reshaping the software R&D organization to bring a future-oriented software portfolio for industrial automation to market. You will report to the Vice President of Product Group Software and closely collaborate with technical leaders from software and firmware teams distributed across various parts of the company.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and developing a coherent software and system ecosystem that includes an IDE, a runtime environment for industrial real-time devices, and a digital platform.
  • Collaborating with product teams (both hardware and software) to ensure seamless integration of all components, enhancing usability and system performance.
  • Defining and enforcing best practices in software architecture and design, firmware development, and system architecture to meet non-functional requirements such as performance, security, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Utilizing scalable agile methods to facilitate a collaborative and efficient team working environment, ensuring timely delivery of integrated solutions.
  • Working with stakeholders from various areas to collect and validate requirements, ensuring the software ecosystem meets diverse needs.
  • Leading technological decision-making processes within individual products and the entire product portfolio to align with overarching business objectives and technological standards.
  • Staying updated on new technologies and methodologies that could benefit the ecosystem and driving continuous innovations and improvements.

Qualifications for the role

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • 15-20 years of experience in software development covering multiple areas such as front-end applications, cloud services, and embedded software development, along with a deep understanding of IDEs, runtime environments, and digital platforms.
  • Progressive experience leading teams ranging from small to large (50+ employees) and managing first-level managers is essential.
  • Proven expertise in leading commercial software products, particularly for B2B clients.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to handle complex technical challenges and make informed decisions.
  • Esteemed people manager with strong intercultural skills, able to work effectively with individuals in a global R&D environment.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, able to convey technical concepts to non-technical audiences and influence stakeholders within a matrix organization.
  • Experience with modern software development tools, languages, and frameworks, as well as transitioning teams to these tools and methodologies.
  • Excellent written and presentation skills in English; proficiency in German is a plus.
