Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in impactful enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, and IoT. We serve top public cloud and silicon providers, along with various industries. As a pioneer of global distributed collaboration, we have over 1,200 colleagues in more than 75 countries, with minimal office-based roles. Teams meet in person two to four times yearly in diverse locations worldwide to align on strategy and execution.

The role of Engineering Manager at Canonical is a first-level engineering management position. We believe open-source technology is set to revolutionize the tech sector and enterprise computing. Our objective is to enhance the accessibility, reliability, and security of open-source deployment and development. Engineering Managers at Canonical are trusted engineers who inspire their teams to excel and foster a culture of growth and collaboration.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a team of engineers, from graduate to senior levels.
  • Coach, mentor, and provide career development feedback to team members.
  • Identify and measure team health indicators and implement disciplined engineering processes.
  • Represent the team and product to stakeholders, partners, and customers.
  • Develop and promote effective engineering and organizational practices.
  • Manage progress on goals and projects collaboratively with other leaders.
  • Expected to travel twice a year for company events for up to two weeks each.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional academic record with a relevant undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Proven experience in leading, coaching, and mentoring software developers.
  • Well-organized with a self-starting ability to ensure the team delivers high-quality results.
  • Advanced expertise in a relevant domain and passionate about software development.
  • Solid experience in an agile development environment.
  • A demonstrated drive for continual learning and building relationships.

Additional Skills Valued:

  • Experience in a developer advocacy or community role.
  • Ops and system administration experience.
  • Performance engineering and security experience.
