Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We are hiring an Information Systems Architect to define best practices in infrastructure as code at a global scale, improving the infrastructure behind tens of millions of devices running Ubuntu.

The Information Systems (IS) team is responsible for all IT operations at Canonical, including the infrastructure for building, packaging, and distributing Ubuntu globally. As the IS Architect, you will own the design of hardware and software implementation from PCI lanes to CDN and everything in between. Your decisions will impact the user experience for millions and drive how Canonical's engineers engage with compute and network resources in a devops setting. You will lead System Reliability Engineers (SRE) and Data Center Engineers (DCE) in embracing best practices and making informed technology choices across cloud infrastructure and services. You will coach the IS team on automation, reliability, operational/technical scalability, network infrastructure, and security.

This is a home-based position with twice-annual travel to company events (approximately 4 weeks per year) and will be based remotely in the EMEA region.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define, get buy-in, and implement a holistic vision for a world-class internal cloud.
  • Maintain and update the technical design roadmap and guidelines for the IS SREs.
  • Collaborate with cloud-ops software development teams for roadmap and prioritization.
  • Provide input and advice to IS management on technology and business cases.
  • Lead technical choices for self-service product implementation.
  • Automate operations for reuse across large distributed systems.
  • Analyze incidents and establish structural improvements.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university.
  • Experience with cloud computing concepts, technologies, and operations.
  • Practical knowledge of Linux networking, routing, firewalls, and large-scale networking.
  • A passion for writing, sharing, and maintaining enterprise open-source software.
  • Clear communication skills in English, both verbal and written.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Background in modern software engineering (peer-review, unit testing, SCM, CI/CD, Agile).
  • Hands-on experience with automated administration of enterprise Linux servers at scale.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive compensation with annual review and performance-driven bonuses.
  • Distributed work environment with in-person team sprints twice a year.
  • Personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year.
  • Recognition rewards, annual leave, maternity/paternity leave, and Employee Assistance Program.
