Position

Ubuntu Linux, the world's most popular Linux distribution, is experiencing an unprecedented surge in demand. To meet this need, the Canonical Kernel Team is seeking individuals with a deep technical background in operating system kernels and distributions, alongside strong leadership skills.

The successful candidate will take the lead in the architecture, implementation, and ongoing delivery of several key aspects of kernel engineering, which include driving engagements for key Silicon and Cloud partners, leading the mitigation of vulnerabilities, architecting enhancements to performance and correctness, streamlining packaging and distribution of third-party components, and developing new methods to deliver Ubuntu Linux at scale. Although not a formal managerial role, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to lead engineers while collaborating with other teams are essential.

Work Conditions:

  • Remote work environment.
  • International travel at least twice a year for company events lasting up to two weeks.
  • Full-time role.

Language Requirements:

  • Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal, are required.

Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of industry experience preferred but not mandatory.
  • Expertise in the C programming language.
  • Experience with *nix-based operating systems and distributions (Linux experience ideal but not required).
  • Proficiency in Python and Bash scripting.
  • Understanding of the git version control system.

Additional Skills:

  • Background in RTOS and real-time performance analysis.
  • Experience with Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging.
  • Familiarity with kernel patching and debugging.
  • Knowledge of device drivers, BSP's, and low-level system engineering.
