Position

We are seeking an experienced software engineer who is passionate about Linux systems, hardware architectures, Ubuntu, and the open-source community. You will join the Ubuntu Foundations Engineering team to maintain and enhance the Ubuntu bootloader stack, providing fast, reliable, and secure Ubuntu systems across all devices and in the cloud.

The boot process is one of the most critical aspects of any operating system, where stability, reliability, and security are paramount. As part of the Ubuntu Foundations team, your work will be essential to ensuring that Ubuntu remains a leader in desktop, server, and cloud environments.

In this highly technical role, you will engage with Secure Boot, Measured Boot, Full Disk Encryption, and other technologies integral to modern operating system boot processes. The work you do will have a significant impact on system security and reliability.

As a Linux System Engineer, you will:

  • Collaborate proactively with a distributed team.
  • Work with a highly technical team to define and shape the boot architecture of Ubuntu.
  • Write high-quality code to create new features and contribute upstream to projects like Grub, shim, and u-boot.
  • Contribute to feature and bug fixes and review code produced by other engineers.
  • Mentor less senior engineers and participate in code and design reviews.

Valued Skills, Approach, and Experience:

  • Development experience with early boot software like TF-A, OP-TEE, U-Boot, shim, GRUB, or the Linux kernel.
  • Experience on non-x86 platforms such as ARM or RISC-V.
  • Strong motivation, curiosity, flexibility, articulation, and accountability.
  • A long-time Linux user with a broad interest in its future.
  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or a similar field.
