About the Job
This position is for a Senior Engineer or above in any team at Canonical. After the initial interviews, we will determine suitable teams for your application. Canonical delivers open source solutions across various computing platforms, with a focus on Ubuntu, the world's favorite Linux for cloud, desktop, and IoT. Our engineering teams work on operating systems, programming languages, applications, devices, infrastructure, and services using technologies such as Golang, Python, C, C++, Rust, React, and Flutter.
As a Senior Engineer, you will not only be an exceptional software architect and coder but also demonstrate the leadership qualities necessary to motivate a team to deliver outstanding products. You will work closely with an Engineering Manager to oversee team outcomes. Responsibilities include:
- Leading the design and architecture of impactful open-source projects
- Coding in Golang, Rust, Python, C/C++, or Typescript/React
- Collaborating with a globally distributed team
- Mentoring colleagues in their career progression
- Contributing to high-quality code and technical documentation
Requirements
- Exceptional academic track record from high school and university
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a STEM field, or a compelling alternative narrative
- Proven technical leadership and ability to motivate teams
- Proficiency in at least one of Go, Rust, Python, or C
- Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)
- Professional written and spoken English
- Ability to travel twice annually for company events (up to two weeks each)
Additional Skills (Preferred)
- Experience with container technologies (LXD, Docker, Kubernetes)
- Knowledge of distributed systems, embedded systems, performance engineering, and software security
- Familiarity with public clouds or OpenStack, Debian/Ubuntu packaging, and scalable web services
