Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software, best known for Ubuntu, widely utilized in various enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. The company operates globally with a distributed team of over 1200 colleagues across 75+ countries, meeting in person 2 to 4 times a year to align on strategy.

The Ubuntu Engineering Server Team is seeking open source enthusiasts to contribute to the evolution of Ubuntu. The team maintains and packages a range of software, including web servers, databases, and virtualization/containerization solutions. This role provides an exciting opportunity for a software engineer passionate about open source software to work with leading technology talent and make a meaningful impact.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate proactively within a distributed team.
  • Foster a seamless software ecosystem for all Ubuntu users.
  • Evaluate contributions from other engineers to ensure high software standards.
  • Shape the future of Ubuntu by generating new ideas and providing guidance on current work.
  • Collaborate with the Ubuntu and Debian communities, upstream projects, and commercially supported customers.
  • Maintain Ubuntu Server packages including traditional server workloads, virtualization and containers, and language runtimes/toolchains.

Work Conditions:

  • Fully remote position with global travel opportunities (2 to 4 weeks per year for internal and external events).

Requirements:

  • Strong passion for technology and collaboration.
  • Curious, flexible, articulate, and accountable personality.
  • Experience or interest in open source maintenance or contributions.
  • Ability to handle complex workloads and systems, including writing detailed test plans and reproducibility steps.
  • Proficiency in several programming languages including C/C++, Python, Rust, Go, Ruby, and PHP.
  • Experience with packaging in various ecosystems (e.g., Python wheels, Rust Crates, Go Modules, deb, rpm).
  • Familiarity with using and creating containers and virtual machines.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, STEM or equivalent, or equivalent professional experience (5+ years).
