Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, particularly noted for its platform, Ubuntu. As an integral part of the team, the Software Engineer will work on evolving Ubuntu Server, which is the #1 operating system in public clouds. The role involves collaborating within a distributed team to maintain and package various software components essential for server workloads, virtualization, and containerization.

Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with a distributed team to foster a seamless user experience for all Ubuntu users.
  • Evaluate contributions from other engineers to uphold high-quality software standards.
  • Shape the future of Ubuntu through innovative ideas and guidance on ongoing projects.
  • Collaborate with teams within the Ubuntu and Debian communities, as well as upstream projects and commercially supported customers.
  • Debug issues in open source and team-maintained code.
  • Maintain Ubuntu Server packages, focusing on traditional server workloads, virtualization, and container management.

Work Conditions:

  • Remote work with global travel expected 2 to 4 weeks per year for internal and external events.

Requirements:

  • Passion for technology and collaboration with talented individuals.
  • Curiosity and flexibility, alongside strong accountability.
  • Interest or experience in open source maintenance or contribution.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field.
  • Understanding of reproducibility and testing methods, with proficiency in setting up test systems in containers or virtual machines.
  • Strong programming skills in one or more languages, including C/C++, Python, Rust, or Go.
  • Basic understanding of package management and dependency resolution.
  • Interest in containerization and virtualization technologies such as Docker, LXD, Virtualbox, and QEMU.
