Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. The company is a pioneer of global distributed collaboration, with 1200+ colleagues in 75+ countries and very few office-based roles. Teams meet two to four times yearly in person to align on strategy and execution. Canonical's Ubuntu Engineering Server Team is seeking open source enthusiasts to help build the distro of the future.

This role offers the opportunity to help evolve Ubuntu by working with an experienced team while maintaining and packaging software, including web servers, databases, and virtualization/containerization stacks. Applicants can expect to collaborate with a distributed team, evaluate contributions from other engineers, and play a role in shaping the future of Ubuntu.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate proactively within a distributed team.
  • Foster a seamless software ecosystem for all Ubuntu users.
  • Maintain high-quality software standards in evaluating contributions.
  • Shape the future of Ubuntu through new ideas and collaboration.
  • Debug issues on open source and team maintained code.
  • Maintain Ubuntu Server packages for traditional workloads, virtualization, and containers.

Work Conditions:

  • Work from home with global travel (2 to 4 weeks per year for internal and external events).
  • Full-time remote position.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field.
  • Strong fundamentals in at least one programming language (C/C++, Python, Rust, Go).
  • Interest or experience in open source maintenance or contribution.
  • Understanding of package management and dependency resolution.
  • Interest in containerization and virtualization technologies.
  • Comfortable setting up test systems in containers or virtual machines.

Language Requirements:

  • Proficiency in English is typically expected.
