About the Job: Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, with a focus on delivering Ubuntu, a platform widely used for enterprise initiatives including public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. With a global team of over 1200 colleagues across 75+ countries, Canonical embraces a distributed work culture, meeting in person a few times a year in various locations to align on strategies.

We are looking for engineering managers experienced in high-quality microservice architectures and high-performance team leadership, along with strong expertise in Linux kernel, virtualisation, storage, and networking. In this role, you will lead a team of remote engineers, develop talent through coaching and mentorship, and set expectations with other engineering teams and senior management. A solid technical background combined with effective team management skills is necessary.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of remote engineers
  • Develop talent through coaching and career development
  • Manage expectations with engineering teams, senior management, and stakeholders
  • Advocate for modern software development practices
  • Participate in code and architectural reviews
  • Engage with Canonical teams, the open-source community, and partners
  • Work from home with global travel for internal and external events (4 to 6 weeks per year)

Requirements:

  • Understanding of modern Linux cloud computing technologies, including networking, storage, containers, and Kubernetes (K8s)
  • Proven experience in developing and growing people
  • Focused on delivering timely, high-quality software
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or a similar field
  • Strong written and verbal technical communication skills
  • Experience programming in C and/or Go
