About the Job:
Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems, best known for our platform, Ubuntu. We serve a wide range of enterprise and technology markets, and our customers include top public cloud and silicon providers as well as industry leaders. In this role, you will lead Multipass, a mini-cloud workstation application that allows developers to create local cloud experiences for testing, builds, and other applications.

As a Software Engineering Manager, your focus will be on leading a remote team of engineers. You will be responsible for developing your team members through coaching, mentoring, and feedback, while also ensuring the delivery of high-quality software. Your technical leadership experience and solid background in software engineering will be crucial in fostering a culture of collaboration and technical excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of remote engineers.
  • Develop talent through coaching, mentoring, and hands-on career development.
  • Set and manage expectations with other teams, management, and stakeholders.
  • Advocate for modern software development practices.
  • Participate in the engineering process through code and architectural reviews.
  • Engage with teams across the company and the open-source community.

Work Conditions:

  • This is a remote position available in EMEA and the Americas.
  • Opportunities for global travel for 4 to 6 weeks per year for internal and external events.
  • Distributed work environment with in-person team sprints twice a year.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or a similar field.
  • Strong technical communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Expertise in modern C++ development and cross-platform experience (macOS and/or Windows).
  • Familiarity with hypervisor technologies such as Hyper-V, VirtualBox, and KVM.
  • Open-source experience and engagement.

Language Requirements:
Strong written and verbal technical communication skills in English.
