About the Job:
Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets, specifically through its widely used platform, Ubuntu. We are hiring a Software Maintenance Engineer to work in a dynamic engineering role within Linux-based infrastructure and applications, encompassing various layers of the stack such as bare metal, virtualization, containerization, storage, and networking.

The role provides an opportunity for a technologist with a passion for Linux and open source to build a successful career with Canonical. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills and a talent for troubleshooting and resolving issues with technology used globally. Responsibilities include resolving customer problems, maintaining relationships with engineering teams, participating in upstream communities, developing bug fixes, code reviews, and managing priorities effectively.

The position will require you to work from home and travel internationally up to 10% of the time for team meetings, events, and conferences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, and Kubernetes.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with Canonical's Field, Support, and Product Engineering teams.
  • Participate in upstream communities.
  • Develop bug fixes and backport patches.
  • Review code produced by other engineers.
  • Prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Maintain clear communication.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional academic track record in Computer Science, STEM, or a similar field.
  • Experience with Linux and open source software.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (Python, Go, C, or C++) on Linux.
  • A strong desire to learn unfamiliar technologies and delve into complex issues.
  • Willingness to travel up to four times a year for internal events.
