About the Job: Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, particularly known for our platform, Ubuntu. We are seeking a System Software Engineer to join our team focused on modern C and C++ programming languages and their ecosystems within Ubuntu. This role will involve delivering the best possible GCC and LLVM runtimes, enhancing developer experience, and providing necessary tooling in Ubuntu. As a member of the team, you will be responsible for ensuring that cutting-edge innovations in modern programming languages are accessible to Ubuntu users. This position is suited for a software engineer with a strong passion for compilers, runtimes, and toolchains. You will be working on a critical component of the Ubuntu system and making strides in the open-source community. Key Responsibilities: - Collaborate proactively with a distributed team. - Select, integrate, and package tooling to improve developer and operator experience with GCC and LLVM. - Write high-quality code and debug issues. - Review code and mentor less senior engineers. - Engage in architectural decisions to enhance Ubuntu's overall performance and user experience. Work Conditions: - Remote work with global travel of 2 to 4 weeks per year for internal and external events. - Flexible working hours. Requirements: - Relevant experience with GCC or LLVM, preferably in cloud-native software and Linux. - Experience in packaging software for Debian and Ubuntu. - A strong background as a long-time Linux user. - An undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative about an alternate path. - Passionate, curious, and self-motivated individual. Language Requirements: - Proficiency in English is expected.
