About the Job: Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in various groundbreaking enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. As part of our commitment to innovation, we are establishing a new team focused on the Python programming language and its ecosystem on Ubuntu.

We are seeking a System Software Engineer who will be responsible for delivering the best possible Python runtime, developer experience, and supporting tooling on Ubuntu. This role is a fantastic opportunity for a software engineer passionate about open source software, Linux systems, software architectures, and the Python programming language.

As part of the Ubuntu Foundations Team, you will contribute to making Ubuntu the best operating system for developing and running Python applications across various environments, including the cloud, datacenters, and containers. Your work will directly impact the integration of Python within the Ubuntu ecosystem, enhancing both developer and user experiences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate proactively with a distributed team.
  • Select, integrate, and package best-of-breed tooling with Ubuntu to improve the developer and operator experience with Python.
  • Write high-quality code to create and debug new features.
  • Review and mentor fellow engineers on code and design reviews.
  • Work with other teams to ensure architecture decisions enhance the overall performance of Ubuntu.

Work Conditions:

  • Remote work with a requirement to travel globally for 2 to 4 weeks a year for internal and external events.

Who You Are:

  • You have relevant Python experience, ideally in cloud-native software and Linux.
  • You have an interest or experience in packaging software for Debian and Ubuntu.
  • You are a long-time Linux user with an exceptional academic track record.
  • You are passionate, curious, and self-motivated with strong communication skills.
  • International travel for company events (up to two weeks long) is required.

Language Requirements:

  • Proficiency in English is expected due to the international nature of the role.
