In this role, the Associate Research Scientist will support advanced, quantitatively intensive research at the Center for Technology, Economics, and Development (CTED) with a primary focus on artificial intelligence, machine learning, mathematical modeling, and computational analysis. The Associate Research Scientist will play a central role in supporting research design, algorithm development, data analysis, and coding tasks across CTED’s interdisciplinary projects. This position will be supervised by the Principal Investigator, Dr. Yaw Nyarko, and Co-Principal Investigator, Dr. Raša Karapandža, contributing to AI-driven and blockchain-enabled research related to commodities markets and economic development.
Responsibilities
- Support experimental and field-based research.
- Prepare literature reviews.
- Translate complex AI and mathematical findings into clear written outputs.
- Contribute to research reports, concept notes, and academic publications.
- Develop, test, and evaluate machine learning models using programming and computational tools (including Python, MATLAB, and related libraries).
- Review, proofread, and execute formal mathematical proofs.
- Implement optimization and simulation-based methods.
- Analyze large and complex datasets.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, or a related field (e.g., Economics with a strong mathematics background).
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
- Extensive coding experience.
- Preference for applicants with field research experience in emerging countries and experience working on randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
- Proficient in programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, and/or MATLAB.
- Strong interest in economic and quantitative research and willingness to learn about blockchain technology.
- Experience in web development, blockchain, commodities markets, and technology and economic development is a plus.
- Ability to work autonomously in a multidisciplinary environment while being a collaborative team member.

Contract and Travel
This position offers a one-year contract with the possibility of renewal, contingent on exceptional performance.
