About the role:
At the company, the Associate Underwriter is a member of our Bermuda Excess Casualty Underwriting team, which provides mid-to-high-attachment excess liability capacity to large corporate insureds. The mission of the team is to add creativity to tech-enabled efficiency and robust analytics to address risks others avoid. This is a developmental underwriting role responsible for underwriting renewal business according to authority level and established guidelines. Working closely with underwriters, actuarial, compliance and operations, the associate underwriter supports the full underwriting lifecycle, from submission receipt and risk analysis through quoting, binding and policy issuance, while building the technical skills to progress to an underwriter role. This role is based in the company’s Hamilton, Bermuda office.
The actual base salary and title for the selected candidate is commensurate with the candidate's experience and expectations. Responsibilities & Accountabilities:
- Submission Review: Perform initial submission triage against the company’s excess casualty risk appetite and guidelines, identify missing information, and follow up with brokers as needed.
- Underwriting Analysis & Rating: Prepare underwriting worksheets for renewal accounts, capturing company descriptions, operations, exposures, schedules of underlying policies, and assessing renewal changes and key findings. Prepare accounts for actuarial review and liaise with the Actuarial team to ensure analyses are complete and timely. Under the guidance of senior underwriters, develop the ability to analyze more complex risks and unusual program structures.
- Quote, Bind & Policy Issuance: Prepare quotes, binders, and endorsements for underwriters in accordance with authority levels and agreed-upon terms and conditions. Issue renewal policy documentation accurately and on time using the Bermuda Market Form and follow-form wordings, including occurrence and claims-made. Track and clear outstanding subjectivities and premium receivables in accordance with the company’s financial and operational procedures.
- File Management, Reporting & Compliance: Maintain complete, audit-ready insured files, ensuring all correspondence and documentation is accurately recorded and stored. Maintain data integrity across underwriting and policy administration systems and team tracking tools. Meet departmental service standards and comply with underwriting guidelines, authority levels, and regulatory requirements.
- Broker, Client & Internal Collaboration: Demonstrate a customer service mindset by proactively communicating with brokers regarding submissions, quote follow-ups, and policy documentation to help meet client expectations. As required, attend broker and insured meetings for renewal business opportunities. Collaborate directly with internal partners, including Claims, Actuarial, Compliance, Finance, and Operations.
- Development & Special Projects: Develop insurance and underwriting knowledge, skills, and capabilities, with a clear path toward expanded underwriting authority. Pursue continued education in risk management and P&C insurance, as appropriate, including industry designations such as AINS or CPCU. Contribute to special projects as assigned, including process documentation, internal reporting, and workflow improvements.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
- Bachelor’s degree is preferred, ideally in business, finance, economics, mathematics or a related field or equivalent professional experience.
- 2 to 5 years of insurance/finance industry experience preferred; underwriting assistant, internship, broker or carrier experience in casualty or excess liability lines is a plus.
- Knowledge of the insurance industry and underwriting, including familiarity with the submission, quote, bind and issue process.
- Awareness of excess casualty concepts such as towers, attachment points and follow-form coverage is a plus.
- Analytical and comfortable working with exposure and loss data; strong Microsoft Excel (e.g., pivot tables, lookups) and Word skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy, particularly with policy documentation and data entry.
- Strong organization and time management, with the ability to manage a high volume of accounts and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to build relationships with brokers and internal partners.
- Interest in developing an underwriting career; progress toward an industry designation (e.g., AINS, CPCU) is a plus.
- Ability to process and adapt to change in a rapid growth company environment. The company associates are expected to be curious, thrifty, and resourceful to manage through the unknowns of growing a specialty (re)insurance business from the ground up.
