What We're Looking For
We need a backend engineer who's comfortable at the cloud-to-edge boundary. You should be someone who has built and run real services in production, thinking in terms of protocols and failure modes rather than just endpoints. Ideal candidates would rather spend time diagnosing why a connection drops under load than dismiss it as a flaky network. We’re a small, fast-moving team, so we need someone who can take ownership of their responsibilities with minimal guidance, while also having the eagerness to learn from those around them. This role is suited for individuals willing to grow rather than those who have everything figured out.
What You'll Be Working On
- Designing and building backend services that move data reliably between our cloud systems and edge/device environments, utilizing more than one network protocol.
- Containerizing and deploying services that must run consistently in both cloud and edge environments.
- Collaborating directly with engineers building the physical and product sides of our offering to identify backend support needs.
- Investigating and resolving real production issues such as latency, dropped connections, and data consistency across unreliable links, targeting root causes rather than just symptoms.
- Enhancing and hardening existing systems alongside greenfield work.
What Makes This Role Different
You won't be building backend services in a highly controlled and stable environment. The systems you create must function properly even when the network is unreliable, as they often interact with tangible physical components, not just other data center services. Collaboration is direct, without layers of approval standing between you and the deployment of your creations.
Skills We Need
- 3 to 5 years of backend experience in building and running large-scale, in-production services.
- Strong hands-on experience in Java, Python, or Kotlin, with the ability to work comfortably in at least two of these languages. Other programming languages are also welcome.
- Proficient knowledge of cloud services and edge compute, with practical experience in moving data across multiple network protocols.
- Experience with containerized development and ideally with specific cloud-to-edge deployment patterns.
- Comfortable with agile methodologies and continuous integration, valuing them for their contribution to a small team’s efficiency rather than adhering to processes out of obligation.
