About The Role
As a Backend Engineer on the Pay & Card team, you will focus on backend systems supporting crypto and fiat payment experiences for users and merchants globally. You will collaborate closely with backend engineers, product managers, QA engineers, and other cross-functional teams to build reliable, secure, and scalable payment services. This position offers hands-on experience with high-throughput transaction systems, distributed architectures, payment processing, and financial infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain backend services supporting the company Pay and Card products.
- Build scalable APIs and microservices for payment processing, transaction management, merchant services, and related financial workflows.
- Participate in the development of distributed systems that handle high-volume and latency-sensitive transactions.
- Work with databases, caching systems, message queues, and other infrastructure components to enhance system performance and reliability.
- Implement robust transaction workflows with appropriate handling for retries, idempotency, concurrency, and failure scenarios.
- Assist with troubleshooting production issues using logs, metrics, tracing, and root-cause analysis.
- Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code and engage in code reviews.
- Collaborate with product and engineering teams to convert business requirements into technical solutions.
- Contribute to enhancements in system reliability, observability, security, and engineering practices.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, and computer science fundamentals.
- Proficiency in at least one backend programming language such as Java, Go, C++, Python, or a similar language.
- Understanding of relational databases and SQL, including indexes, transactions, and database design fundamentals.
- Familiarity with RESTful APIs, HTTP, networking, and client-server architecture.
- Understanding of operating systems, concurrency, and common backend engineering concepts.
- Ability to write clear, maintainable code and systematically reason about technical issues.
- Strong communication skills and a willingness to learn in a fast-moving engineering environment.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with MySQL/PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka, or other message-queue technologies.
- Understanding of distributed-system concepts such as consistency, availability, replication, caching, asynchronous processing, and fault tolerance.
- Knowledge of payment concepts such as authorization, capture, settlement, refunds, reconciliation, chargebacks, and payment lifecycle management.
- Previous backend engineering internship, personal project, hackathon, or open-source experience.
- Interest in cryptocurrency, blockchain, fintech, and payment infrastructure.
