The Specialist combines horticulture expertise with technical maintenance capabilities to manage temperature, humidity, lighting, irrigation, nutrient delivery, soil and substrate conditions, and specialized horticulture equipment. Additionally, this position implements rigorous greenhouse cleaning and sterilization procedures and maintains detailed records to support the long-term health, conservation, and integrity of botanic collections.
Responsibilities
- Maintain specialized botanic collections with a focus on rare and sensitive plant species.
- Ensure optimal growing conditions in greenhouses and conservatories through monitoring and environmental control.
- Manage temperature, humidity, lighting, irrigation, nutrient delivery, soil conditions, and horticulture equipment.
- Implement greenhouse cleaning and sterilization procedures.
- Maintain detailed records related to plant health, environmental conditions, treatments, and equipment performance.
- Conduct comprehensive plant health assessments and implement corrective measures as needed.
- Manage irrigation systems and nutrient delivery programs for diverse botanic collections.
- Develop and implement preventative and seasonal maintenance schedules for indoor and specialized botanic areas.
- Coordinate maintenance activities with horticulture teams, facilities personnel, contractors, and other technical specialists.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Botany, Plant Sciences, or a related discipline.
- Specialist training or certification in greenhouse management, controlled-environment horticulture, irrigation systems, plant health, horticulture equipment maintenance, or related disciplines is advantageous.
- Fluency in English and Arabic is required.
- Minimum 5+ years of relevant professional experience in botanic garden maintenance or a comparable horticulture environment.
- Demonstrated experience maintaining botanic gardens, greenhouses, conservatories, and specialized plant collections.
- Proven experience maintaining optimal growing conditions for rare, delicate, sensitive, or high-value plant species.
- Practical experience monitoring and controlling greenhouse or conservatory environmental conditions, including temperature, humidity, lighting, and ventilation.
- Experience conducting comprehensive plant health assessments and implementing appropriate corrective measures.
- Experience in managing irrigation systems and nutrient delivery programs.
- Practical experience in soil health, growing media, and substrate management.
- Experience implementing greenhouse cleaning, sanitation, sterilization, and biosecurity procedures.
- Experience with Integrated Pest Management and preventative plant health programs.
- Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining environmental monitoring equipment and horticulture control systems.
- Experience in inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and calibration of specialized horticulture equipment.
- Experience in maintaining detailed records of plant health and maintenance activities.
- Previous experience in a botanic garden, conservatory, or comparable specialized horticulture environment is preferred.
