Containerization & Virtualisation Architect

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems, known for its platform, Ubuntu, widely used in enterprise initiatives like public cloud, data science, AI, and IoT. The company has a distributed team with over 1,100 colleagues in more than 75 countries, conducting in-person meetings two to four times a year. Canonical is seeking a software architect for LXD and MicroCloud.

As a software architect, you will be responsible for the architecture, design, and evolution of LXD, a modern Golang system container and virtual machine orchestrator, as well as Canonical MicroCloud, which integrates LXD with Ceph and OVN.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the design and architecture of LXD and MicroCloud
• Code in Golang and C
• Collaborate with a globally distributed team
• Mentor and guide colleagues in their development
• Display technical leadership within Canonical and the wider community
• Review code produced by team members
• Ensure product security and efficiency
• Solve problems through leadership and skills development

Requirements:

• Exceptional academic record in Computer Science or STEM, or a relevant alternative path
• Experience in Golang and C
• Familiarity with storage, networking, and virtualization
• Experience with container technologies and distributed systems
• Attention to detail and performance-oriented mindset
• Professional written and spoken English
• Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)
• Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events (up to two weeks long)
