Canonical is seeking a Data Governance Engineer responsible for developing and managing data governance policies, processes, standards, and monitoring in line with internal policies and relevant regulatory frameworks (e.g., GDPR, DPA, ISO). The role involves creating and maintaining an internal data catalog with automated data labeling and quality metrics, performing access management, and ensuring data security best practices.

The Data Governance team operates within the Commercial Systems unit, aiming to enable secure and well-governed access to extensive data sets that originate from various internal and external sources. The team utilizes renowned open-source data governance tools such as Trino and Ranger.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define, monitor, and execute data governance policies
  • Design, implement, and maintain data labeling and quality metrics in the data catalog
  • Deploy and manage services developed by the team
  • Mentor and provide career development feedback depending on seniority
  • Promote effective engineering and organizational practices

Work Conditions:

  • This position is remote with flexibility for employees based in the EMEA region.
  • Travel internationally up to twice a year for company events, lasting up to two weeks each.

Requirements:

  • Exceptional academic track record from high school and university
  • Undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a strong narrative about an alternative chosen path
  • Proven experience with data quality, governance, and security processes and tools
  • Proficiency in software development using Python and SQL
  • Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills
  • Strong results orientation and personal drive to meet commitments

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience in performance engineering and security
  • Familiarity with Airbyte, Ranger, Superset, Temporal, or Trino

Language Requirements:

  • Professional proficiency in written and spoken English is required.
