Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems for global enterprise and technology markets, known for its platform, Ubuntu. We are seeking a Data Governance Engineer who will focus on developing and implementing data governance policies, processes, standards, and monitoring compliance with internal policies and relevant regulatory frameworks such as GDPR and ISO.

The successful candidate will help maintain an internal data catalog with automated data labeling and quality metrics, manage access, and ensure data security best practices. The Data Governance team collaborates with well-known open-source tools like Trino and Ranger to define processes and promote effective data use.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define, monitor, and execute data governance policies.
  • Design, implement, and maintain data labeling and quality metrics in the data catalog.
  • Deploy and operate services developed by the team.
  • Provide coaching, mentorship, and career development feedback based on seniority.
  • Promote effective engineering and organizational practices.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university.
  • Undergraduate degree in a technical subject or an alternative compelling narrative.
  • Experience with data quality, governance, and security processes and tools.
  • Proficiency in software development using Python and SQL.
  • Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
  • Result-oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments.
  • Ability to travel internationally two times a year for up to two weeks for company events.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in performance engineering and security.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Airbyte, Ranger, Superset, Temporal, or Trino.

Language Requirements:

  • Professional proficiency in English (written and spoken).
