About the Role
As a Database Administrator, you will play a critical role in managing our growing database infrastructure, which spans multiple cloud platforms and hosting environments. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the health and operational reliability of our production databases, including PostgreSQL and MySQL environments across AWS and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). You will face challenges that extend beyond routine administration, such as managing multi-terabyte database environments, high-availability architectures, and disaster recovery strategies. Collaboration with engineering, cloud, and reliability teams will be essential as you help developers optimize database decisions and improve operational processes. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact by solving complex database performance challenges and building resilient data infrastructure.

What You’ll Do
- Manage and maintain PostgreSQL and MySQL databases across AWS, GCP, and self-managed environments.
- Monitor database performance, availability, and capacity.
- Optimize queries, indexing, and database resource utilization.
- Manage backups, point-in-time recovery, and disaster recovery.
- Implement database replication, high availability, and failover strategies.
- Plan database upgrades, migrations, and safe schema changes.
- Maintain database security, access controls, and auditing.
- Automate database operations using Bash, Python, or similar tools.
- Troubleshoot database incidents and perform root-cause analysis.
- Collaborate with engineering, DevOps, SRE, and Cloud teams to improve database reliability and scalability.
What Success Looks Like (First 90–120 Days)
First 30 Days:
- Develop a clear understanding of the production database estate across AWS, GCP, and in-Kingdom hosting.
- Understand existing database architecture, operational workflows, monitoring, and recovery procedures.
- Build strong working relationships with the database team, Cloud Engineering, SRE, and development teams.
- Identify significant risks and improvement opportunities across availability, performance, backup, and recovery.
By Day 60:
- Independently handle assigned database administration and troubleshooting activities.
- Review backup configurations and validate recovery procedures for critical databases.
- Identify gaps in database monitoring and alerting, including replication lag, WAL contention, autovacuum, and table bloat.
- Contribute to database performance improvements and operational documentation.
By Day 90:
- Complete critical database restore tests against an agreed recovery-testing plan, document gaps, and define corrective actions.
- Document key database failure scenarios through practical runbooks.
- Implement database monitoring and alerting improvements for prioritized operational risks.
- Actively contribute to database reliability, performance, and incident-prevention initiatives.
By Day 120:
- Establish a safer database change-management process with appropriate reviews, DDL auditing, and rollback planning.
- Develop a practical PostgreSQL major-upgrade roadmap, assessing compatibility and migration risks.
- Evaluate and document the high-availability approach for the in-Kingdom database environment.
- Provide database size and activity metrics to support per-customer cost-allocation initiatives.
Who You Are

You are comfortable managing large, business-critical databases and can balance operational stability with the need for architectural, automation, and scalability improvements.
Technically, you likely:
- Have 5+ years of hands-on PostgreSQL administration experience in production.
- Have experience with AWS Aurora, Amazon RDS, MySQL, and self-managed Linux databases.
- Understand database performance tuning, replication, high availability, and disaster recovery.
- Have experience managing multi-terabyte databases, upgrades, and migrations.
- Can automate database operations using Bash or Python.
When it comes to database resilience:
- You have hands-on experience with backups, recovery, replication, and failover.
- You can troubleshoot database incidents and minimize downtime.
- You follow safe change-management practices and maintain rollback plans.
When it comes to database performance:
- You can troubleshoot slow queries, indexing, locking, and resource utilization.
- You understand PostgreSQL internals and multi-tenant database challenges.
What Sets You Apart:
- You take ownership and remain calm under pressure.
- You communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with engineering teams.
- You document your work and continuously improve database reliability.
Nice to Have (but not required)
- Experience with multi-tenant database architectures, particularly in environments with thousands of schemas.
- Experience managing databases larger than several terabytes with high write volumes and demanding availability requirements.
- Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL tools such as Patroni, pgBackRest, or WAL-G.
- Experience supporting cloud migrations or moving customer workloads to in-Kingdom hosting environments.
- Familiarity with database observability, capacity planning, and per-customer database usage or cost allocation.
- Experience working in SaaS, data-platform, fintech, banking, or telecommunications environments.
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools and automated database provisioning.
- Relevant certifications, such as EDB PostgreSQL or AWS certifications.
