Position

As the publisher of Ubuntu, Canonical serves millions of developers, focusing on cloud computing, IoT, and data science. The newly established Developer Relations team aims to engage directly with open source communities and developer-centric organizations, enhancing open source development experiences and establishing a feedback loop to shape our offerings. The Developer Relations Engineer acts as a technical expert, strategist, and communicator with a deep empathy for developers. This role combines practical engineering skills with diplomacy across organizational boundaries. Ideal candidates should have an insatiable curiosity for innovation, a dedication to problem-solving, and an understanding of user needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in product meetings from strategy to development progress, providing insights and expertise.
  • Maintain conversations with developer community members through various channels (IRC, social media, forums, meet-ups, etc.).
  • Collaborate with colleagues across teams to establish consistent approaches.
  • Address specific technical problems for users or colleagues.
  • Contribute to technical documentation to meet developer users' needs.
  • Create technical articles, presentations, or workshops.
  • Identify new opportunities to enhance the developer experience.
  • Present at conferences, meetups, or technical events.

Qualifications:

  • Strong programming or development background with a passion for open-source software.
  • Experience with real-world challenges related to software development and deployment on Linux.
  • Practical experience in Linux software packaging (Snaps, debs, charms, rocks, PIP, containers).
  • Knowledge of current software packaging issues in the Linux ecosystem.
  • Previous contributions to open-source communities, software, and documentation.
  • Engaging speaker and presenter with effective communication skills in diverse settings.
  • Willingness to travel globally twice a year for company and partner events.

Additional Skills (optional):

  • Previous experience in a developer advocacy or community role.
  • In-depth familiarity with Ubuntu and the Canonical product ecosystem.
