About the Role / Job Summary
The role involves providing comprehensive domain knowledge input during the pre-purchase stage of biomedical equipment and ensuring the effective maintenance and operation of all biomedical devices in the hospital. The Biomedical Engineer will play a crucial role in inspecting new equipment, providing technical assistance and training to staff, and performing preventive maintenance to keep all biomedical equipment in optimal working condition. This position is key to ensuring that equipment is compliant with safety standards and operationally efficient while liaising with various departments and vendors as necessary.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides domain knowledge input during the pre-purchase stage of all biomedical equipment.
  • Performs inspection, inventory procedures and machine marking for incoming new equipment, prior to use.
  • Provides technical assistance, training, and instruction to staff in the maintenance and operation of equipment.
  • Carries out regular rounds and systematic preventive maintenance of all biomedical equipment, ensuring immediate rectification of any problems identified.
  • Maintains a regularly updated inventory of all biomedical equipment in the hospital.
  • Analyzes equipment for failure, faults, or malfunctions using test instruments and references to technical literature and schematics.
  • Interprets engineering and vendor information, schematic diagrams, and graphic illustrations utilizing clinical, physiologic, and electronic principles.
  • Provides engineering and technical advice to ensure compliance with electrical and other safety standards, preparing reports as required.
  • Coordinates and evaluates the work performed by service contractors, including maintenance, calibration, installation, and verification of service documentation.
  • Prepares and enters data in logs, reports, databases, forms, and equipment records regarding inspections, repairs, and equipment condition and operation.
  • Conducts and assesses safety and risk assessments in collaboration with the FMS teams, developing measures to mitigate identified risks.
  • Prepares requisitions for spare parts procurement from stores/manufacturer.
  • Liaises with other departments and higher management as necessary.
  • Manages and develops vendor relationships, particularly with vendors who repair costly major assemblies of medical equipment.
  • Actively contributes as a member of the FMS committee to develop manuals, policies, and procedures relevant to the biomedical department.
  • Collects monitoring data for the medical equipment management program.
  • Develops and coordinates departmental quality initiatives.
  • Adheres to safety norms of the hospital and follows both patient safety and staff safety rules.
  • Updates biomedical knowledge by attending seminars and workshops concerning new equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Medical Administrator.

OSH Roles and Responsibilities
General

  • Familiarize, comply, and implement the OSHAD-SF & NMCSH Al Ain Internal OSHMS policies and procedures/SOPs relevant to the department.
  • Notify/report all OSHMS hazards, incidents, accidents, and near misses to supervisors or department OSH Facilitator as per protocol.
  • Assist with preparation of departmental risk assessment activities and implement control measures within specified timeframes.
  • Attend applicable department OSHMS training sessions.
  • Do not tamper or misuse any NMCSH Al Ain equipment and property.
  • Comply with all OSH instructions, safe working procedures, and signages in the premises.
  • Familiarize with emergency and evacuation procedures.
  • Not willfully or recklessly endanger anyone's health and safety.
  • Make proper use of all machinery, tools, substances, safety systems, and Personal Protective Equipment provided for work.
  • Participate in required OSH inspections, audits, and monitoring programs.

Biomedical Engineer Specific Responsibilities

  • Maintain hand tools, portable machines, and equipment in good working order at all times.
  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of soldering equipment as per manufacturer guidelines.
  • Comply and carry out work per the related SOP of OSHAD-SF/OSHMS NMCSH, programs, and targets.

BCP Roles and Responsibilities
Responsibilities of staff, including all contractors, include:

  • Achieving a general awareness regarding business continuity and familiarity with disaster recovery plans.
  • Actively participating in the business continuity program when required.
  • Ensuring information governance standards apply to data and information during incidents.

Health Information Literacy and Skills

  • Adhere to information systems policies and procedures required by the Health Care Organization concerning the privacy and confidentiality of health information.
  • Follow security and privacy policies for network usage, including intranet and Internet.
  • Maintain data integrity and validity within an information system and report any confidentiality breaches according to organizational policies.

Health Information/Data Technical Security

  • Apply departmental and organizational data and information system security policies.

Basic Computer Literacy Skills

  • Utilize basic word processing, spreadsheet, and desktop presentation applications as applicable to the work.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the Windows operating environment and use of email, including addressing and forwarding.

Qualifications

  • B.E. (Biomedical) or Master’s in Applied Science in Biomedical Instrumentation or an Equivalent Degree/Fellowship.
  • Two years of experience in maintenance involving applications, preferably in Medical Electronics.
  • Good knowledge of English to read and understand technical literature and schematics.
  • Well-versed in computer skills, including Word and Excel.
