The AppArmor team's primary responsibility is to develop security features and capabilities for AppArmor, the security module that protects all Ubuntu users by providing mandatory access control to confine programs and restrict their access to system resources. This role will enhance the security of millions of people, requiring direct engagement with the community and customers while coordinating across various engineering teams and projects.

As the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for line management and career guidance for a team of engineers ranging from graduate to senior levels. Success in this role will require developing engineering talent, representing the team and product from a technical perspective, and driving collaboration with other teams and customers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a team of engineers.
  • Coach, mentor, and offer career development feedback.
  • Identify and measure team health indicators.
  • Implement disciplined engineering processes.
  • Represent team and product to stakeholders, partners, and customers.
  • Develop and evangelize great engineering and organizational practices.
  • Plan and manage progress on agreed goals and projects.
  • Participate actively in the security engineering leadership team, collaborating with other leaders.

Requirements:

  • Exceptional academic track record from high school and university.
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about an alternative path.
  • Track record of exceeding expectations and a personal drive for success.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Passion for developing and growing people, with a proven history.
  • Organized, ensuring timely and high-quality team output.
  • Professional interaction with colleagues, partners, and the community.
  • Proficient in C with a good understanding of Linux kernel development.
  • Experience with Linux Security Modules.
  • Knowledgeable and passionate about software and application security.
  • Solid experience in an agile development environment.
  • Commitment to continual learning.
  • Ability to build trust, relationships, and confidence; result-oriented.
  • Willingness to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks each).
