Engineering Manager, Automation Intelligence

About the Role
We are seeking an Engineering Manager specializing in Automation Intelligence to lead the development of an innovative intelligence platform aimed at distinguishing legitimate AI agents and automated traffic from malicious bots and other online threats. In this role, you will manage a high-impact engineering team responsible for delivering advanced detection capabilities, classification systems, and APIs that assist enterprises in navigating an increasingly automated internet. You will oversee the product from beta through to general availability and commercial launch, focusing on ensuring exceptional detection accuracy, reliability, and scalability. This role combines strategic leadership with strong technical judgement, establishing quality-driven engineering practices and championing an AI-native development model empowered by coding agents and automated reviews. You will also be responsible for building a high-performing team with the autonomy to innovate, deliver independently, and continuously improve.

Accountabilities:

• Product Delivery & Launch Readiness: Own the engineering roadmap from beta to commercial launch, collaborating with product management on requirements, estimates, prioritization, delivery sequencing, and launch readiness criteria.
• Service Reliability & Performance: Define and validate the service's operational limits, ensuring the platform meets production requirements including throughput, latency, rate limiting, and availability targets.
• Detection Quality & Accuracy: Establish a continuous detection quality framework using representative test datasets, automated false-positive and false-negative testing, and regression suites to maintain and improve detection performance.
• Automation Coverage & Classification: Guide detection capabilities for AI agents, assistants, stealth automation, and headless browsers. Evolve classification systems to provide detailed context, confidence levels, identity verification status, and reason codes.
• Safe Deployment & Continuous Improvement: Manage staged rollouts of detection updates, incorporating feedback and reported detection errors into prioritized engineering improvements.
• Team Leadership & Development: Lead, coach, and develop a small team of senior engineers, managing recruitment and ensuring clear ownership, accountability, and opportunities for professional growth.
• Engineering Standards & Operational Excellence: Introduce effective engineering practices covering technical specifications, code review standards, and performance benchmarks.
• Cross-Team Collaboration: Establish agreements with adjacent engineering teams, clarifying responsibilities and progressively reducing dependencies.
• AI-Native Engineering Leadership: Lead an agent-first development workflow where AI tools support specification, coding, review, and security checks, maintaining oversight for critical changes.
• Measurement & Knowledge Sharing: Evaluate AI-assisted development effectiveness, conduct performance reviews, and document lessons learned to inform engineering practices.
• API Design & Integration Standards: Ensure product interfaces follow a contract-first approach with OpenAPI specifications and accessible APIs for developers and AI agents.
• Observability & Executive Communication: Own service observability and communicate engineering progress and launch readiness clearly to stakeholders.

Requirements:

• Engineering Management Experience: Minimum three years managing software engineers, including senior and staff-level contributors, with a track record of delivering products through launch.
• Strong Technical Foundation: At least eight years of software engineering experience prior to or alongside management, able to critically assess technical designs and engage in architectural discussions.
• Relevant Domain Expertise: Experience in areas such as bot detection, fraud prevention, web security, or high-volume API services.
• Quality-Driven Engineering: Familiarity with measurement-driven engineering processes, including metrics tracking and service-level objectives.
• Hands-On AI Coding Experience: Regular use of AI coding agents and understanding their application in software development workflows.
• Product & Cross-Functional Leadership: Ability to collaborate closely with product managers, making technical trade-offs explicit.
• Communication & Decision-Making: Strong written and verbal communication skills to document decisions and explain technical performance to stakeholders.
• Team Building & Autonomy: Proven capability to develop high-performing teams and create an environment that fosters independence and effective delivery.
• Preferred Experience:
  • Direct experience with bot detection, anti-automation products, or fraud prevention.
  • Knowledge of AI agent ecosystems and protocols.
  • Understanding of browser internals and automation frameworks.
  • Experience operating API-first products with OpenAPI specifications.
  • Background in establishing new engineering teams and maintaining team relationships.
  • Familiarity with SaaS companies in a high-growth environment.
