About the Job: Canonical is building a comprehensive suite of multi-cloud and on-premise data solutions for enterprises, aiming to simplify the operation of any database across clouds or on-premise. The data platform team encompasses various data stores and technologies, including big data, NoSQL, cache-layer capabilities, analytics, and structured SQL engines like Postgres and MySQL. We strive to deliver fault-tolerant, mission-critical distributed systems and develop the world's best data platform. We are seeking technical Engineering Managers to lead teams focused on Big Data and MySQL databases. Our primary programming language is Python, and we apply modern operational practices for data applications on Kubernetes and cloud machines. What Your Day Will Look Like: - Lead a team creating scalable data solutions for Kubernetes and cloud machines. - Hire, coach, mentor, provide feedback, and lead by example. - Contribute code directly when needed, showcasing sound engineering skills. - Set and manage expectations with engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders. - Advocate for modern, agile software development practices. - Promote engineering and organizational practices focused on quality. - Sustain a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values. - Collaborate actively with the leadership team and other organizational leaders. What We Are Looking For: - A software engineering background, preferably with Python and Golang experience. - Experience in production environments at scale, particularly with Big Data or MySQL. - Excellent judgment in understanding and developing people and their capabilities. - Proven ability to build high-quality, open-source software. - Commitment to good engineering practices regarding performance and quality. - Openness to new technologies and a desire to innovate. - A passion for developing and growing people, supported by a strong track record. Additional Skills That You Might Also Bring: - Specialist knowledge in one or more of Spark, Superset, MySQL, or similar technologies. - Prior experience in open source and an eagerness to build products with the community.
