Position

Canonical is looking for an Engineering Manager to join the MAAS (Metal as a Service) team. MAAS aims to create the best solution for building and managing private bare-metal infrastructure, offering cloud-style on-demand APIs for physical server provisioning, network configuration, and storage management. This role requires strong experience in high-quality software development, team leadership, and a deep familiarity with Linux on physical servers, along with Linux storage and data center networking capabilities.

As an Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for leading a distributed team of engineers, talent development through coaching and mentorship, and influencing company culture positively. The position requires collaboration across different engineering teams and the ability to oversee projects from strategy to execution.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a distributed team of engineers across various time zones
  • Develop talent through coaching, feedback, and career planning
  • Advocate for and advance modern software development practices
  • Participate in code and architectural reviews
  • Engage with broader teams and the open-source community
  • Travel for internal and external events for 4 to 6 weeks per year

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional academic background (undergraduate degree in a technical subject)
  • Leadership experience and a commitment to mentoring
  • Confident in providing feedback, sharing ideas, and driving outstanding results
  • Proficient in professional written and spoken English with strong presentation skills
  • Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred) and programming in Python and Go
  • Strong interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability
  • Ability to travel internationally up to two weeks for company events
  • Knowledge of modern Linux cloud computing technologies, including networking, storage, containers, and Kubernetes

Nice-to-have Skills:

  • Experience with Typescript and modern web frameworks (React, Angular, Svelte, Vue)
