Position

As an Engineering Manager at Canonical, your main responsibility is to run an effective team and develop your colleagues. You will lead the development and review of code, while ensuring that the team remains focused, productive, and unblocked. Your role involves mentoring engineers, facilitating technical delivery, and fostering a positive team culture.

You will collaborate with other Engineering Managers, product managers, and architects to create an engineering roadmap with ambitious and achievable goals. Fluency in programming languages and a strong understanding of popular open-source machine learning tools like Kubeflow, MLFlow, and Feast are crucial. Code reviews and architectural leadership are part of the job, along with a commitment to healthy engineering practices, documentation, and performance optimization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a distributed team of engineers and its MLOps/Analytics portfolio.
  • Organize and lead team processes to achieve objectives.
  • Conduct one-on-one meetings with team members.
  • Analyze team health indicators and interact with the community.
  • Review code produced by engineers and represent Canonical at conferences.
  • Mentor and guide team members towards their professional goals.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Proven track record in software delivery and professional Python development experience, preferably in open source.
  • A strong understanding of machine learning challenges and MLOps solutions.
  • Exceptional academic track record and willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events.

Additional Skills:

  • Experience with machine learning libraries and building highly automated solutions.
  • Familiarity with container technologies (Docker, LXD, Kubernetes).
  • Experience with public clouds (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
  • Strong passion for software quality and testing.

Language Requirements: Fluency in relevant programming languages and strong communication skills.
