Position

As an Engineering Manager at Canonical, you will be responsible for managing an effective team and developing the engineers under your guidance. Your primary focus will be to ensure that the team is productive and unblocked, while you also contribute by reviewing code and leading technical initiatives. You are expected to foster growth among team members and maintain a positive work culture, facilitating technical delivery and reflecting on strategy and execution with your team.

You will collaborate closely with other Engineering Managers, product managers, and architects to create an engineering roadmap with ambitious yet achievable goals. The role requires fluency in programming languages and architecture relevant to the team's work, with an emphasis on popular open-source machine learning tools like Kubeflow, MLFlow, and Feast.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a distributed team and its MLOps/Analytics portfolio
  • Organize and lead team processes to achieve objectives
  • Conduct one-on-one meetings and identify team health indicators
  • Review code and mentor engineers to help them reach professional goals
  • Attend conferences to represent Canonical and its MLOps solutions
  • Work remotely with limited global travel (2 to 4 weeks per year)

What We Are Looking For:

  • Proven track record in software delivery
  • Professional Python development experience, preferably in open source
  • Understanding of the machine learning sector, including designing and implementing MLOps solutions
  • A strong academic background, ideally from both high school and university

Additional Skills (Optional):

  • Hands-on experience with machine learning libraries or tools
  • Experience in building automated machine learning solutions
  • Familiarity with container technologies (Docker, LXD, Kubernetes)
  • Knowledge of public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)
  • Passion for software quality and testing
  • Experience working in a distributed team or on open-source projects
