Canonical is committed to transforming software operations through next-generation infrastructure-as-code, enabling efficient bare-metal operations for high-performance computing, private cloud, data lakes, AI/ML, and analytics. We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead and inspire a regional software engineering team focused on developing innovative technology and products.
The Solutions Engineering team collaborates closely with our managed infrastructure operations team, running private OpenStack clouds and Kubernetes clusters globally. Our work in Python aims to create open-source automation capabilities that simplify operations for users building on Ubuntu. The team's focus is on high-quality design, documentation, tests, and enhancing the performance of our operations code packages.
Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a team of Python engineers working remotely across global locations.
  • Hire, coach, mentor, and support your team’s career development.
  • Contribute directly to code development, demonstrating sound engineering principles.
  • Plan and manage progress on agreed goals and projects.
  • Set and manage expectations with other engineering and operations teams.
  • Coordinate with management and internal/external stakeholders or customers.
  • Advocate for modern, agile software development practices.
  • Foster a collaborative engineering culture in alignment with the company values.
  • Collaborate with other leaders in the organization.
  • Travel globally up to 10% for internal and external events.
    Who You Are:
  • You have a passion for developing and growing people and a proven track record in doing so.
  • Knowledgeable and passionate about agile software development.
  • Experienced in leading, coaching, and mentoring software developers, especially in Python.
  • Familiar with cloud computing concepts & technologies.
  • Comfortable with administrating Linux servers, including storage and networking.
  • Hands-on experience with software automation.
  • Organized, with a focus on delivering high-quality software in a timely manner.
  • A lifelong learner.
    Bonus Points For:
  • A degree in Computer Science or a related software engineering field.
  • Understanding of modern infrastructure, including OpenStack or Kubernetes.
  • Experience in both operations and software development.
  • Familiarity with the challenges of large-scale, multi-cloud operations.
  • Expertise in Go programming.
    Work Conditions:
  • Remote work environment.
  • Travel to team sprints twice a year in interesting locations.
