Experienced Software Engineer

About the Role
This is an opportunity for an experienced software engineer to contribute to a global, distributed product ecosystem built around open-source technology and the open web. You’ll work across products and platforms used by a large, diverse user base, with opportunities to solve complex technical challenges at scale. The role combines hands-on engineering with thoughtful system design, debugging, performance optimization, and collaboration. You’ll work with modern development practices, including continuous integration, frequent deployments, and peer code review. AI is increasingly integrated into both product development and engineering workflows. Accountabilities

• Design, build, improve, and maintain software across a diverse product ecosystem, contributing to products such as publishing, e-commerce, content management, and communication platforms.
• Develop reliable, scalable solutions while considering performance, maintainability, abstraction costs, and the needs of a large and diverse user base.
• Participate throughout the engineering lifecycle, from understanding problems and designing solutions through implementation, testing, code review, deployment, and ongoing improvement.
• Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues, approaching debugging systematically and understanding the layers of technology surrounding the systems you work on.
• Collaborate with globally distributed engineering teams through written communication, code reviews, technical discussions, and shared development practices.
• Contribute to open-source projects and engineering practices that encourage transparency, reuse, and community participation.
• Apply AI-assisted development tools and workflows where appropriate to improve engineering productivity and product development.
• Continuously learn, experiment, and adapt across programming languages, frameworks, architectures, and technical paradigms.

Requirements

• Proven professional experience as a software engineer, with a track record of delivering production-quality software.
• Experience working with multiple programming languages, frameworks, and programming paradigms; familiarity with PHP and JavaScript is valuable, while the ability and willingness to become proficient in new technologies is important.
• Experience working at scale, whether through backend systems, performance engineering, distributed systems, or products serving a large and diverse user base.
• Strong understanding of software architecture, abstraction, system behavior, and the trade-offs between technical complexity and business or user value.
• Strong debugging and problem-solving abilities, with an interest in investigating complex technical challenges rather than simply addressing surface-level symptoms.
• High standards for code quality, maintainability, reliability, and attention to detail.
• Ability to work effectively in a fully distributed environment, collaborating asynchronously across teams, time zones, and communication channels.
• Comfortable participating in peer code review, continuous integration, frequent deployments, and iterative product development.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical decisions and collaborate constructively with colleagues.
• Willingness and ability to travel approximately 3–4 weeks per year for in-person team meetups.
• A degree is not specified as a mandatory requirement; demonstrated engineering experience and technical capability are central to the role.
