Position

As a GIS Specialist, you will be responsible for delivering precise and actionable geospatial solutions that enhance operational efficiency, route optimization, and regulatory compliance in waste collection services. Your role will involve ensuring the integrity and security of spatial data, integrating GIS with key operational systems, and using spatial analytics to support informed decision-making. You will champion continuous improvement initiatives by enabling real-time field support, enhancing service coverage, and piloting innovative geospatial technologies, ultimately aiming to improve service reliability, reduce environmental impact, and align with organizational and municipal waste management goals.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and manage geospatial databases for waste collection routes, bin locations, collection points, depots, and transfer stations to support operational planning and service optimization.
  • Maintain up-to-date digital maps of service zones, collection boundaries, and waste infrastructure to enhance routing and scheduling accuracy.
  • Support planning of new service zones and route adjustments through spatial feasibility studies and simulations for cost-effective service expansion.
  • Analyze collection zone boundaries and service coverage to reallocate workloads and improve route distribution.
  • Evaluate and pilot emerging GIS and telematics technologies such as AI-powered routing, LiDAR mapping, or drone-assisted spatial analysis.
  • Develop and optimize daily waste collection routes using GIS-based tools by considering bin volumes, road networks, traffic patterns, and fleet constraints.
  • Validate and correct location data through periodic field audits, GPS verification, and satellite imagery overlays.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in IS-related roles or spatial data management, particularly within waste management, utilities, or public services.
  • Demonstrated experience with GIS software and platforms such as ArcGIS, QGIS, MapInfo, and AutoCAD Map 3D.
  • Strong experience in utilizing spatial databases such as PostGIS and Oracle Spatial, integrating GIS systems with ERP, telematics, and fleet management platforms.
