Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, known for its platform, Ubuntu, widely used in public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We are seeking 2024 and 2025 Graduate Software Engineers to join our engineering teams globally. This role presents a variety of software engineering challenges across open source products and commercial business systems.

As a Graduate Software Engineer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Shaping the product roadmap during global sprints every six months
  • Focusing on design and user experience for developer tooling and command line apps
  • Writing high-quality, resilient, and performant code serving millions of users
  • Mastering key programming languages and Linux system knowledge
  • Engaging with users and the open source community through code reviews
  • Responding to customer issues and understanding enterprise requirements
  • Developing security skills in software design and implementation

Location: Jiddah, Makkah, Saudi Arabia (Remote)

Work Conditions:

  • Full-time
  • Remote work environment with occasional in-person sprints (twice a year)
  • Standard work hours Monday to Friday, with an expectation of productivity and engagement
  • Flexibility to work with global teams in different time zones (EMEA, APAC, AMER)
  • Opportunity for international travel for company events (up to two weeks long, twice a year)

Language Requirements:

  • Professional written and spoken English

What We Are Looking For:

  • Exceptional academic track record in Computer Science, Business Informatics, Mathematics, or another STEM discipline with programming courses
  • Confidence to deliver high-quality code in Python, Rust, C/C++, Golang, JavaScript, or Java
  • Experience with Ubuntu or another Linux distribution
  • Personal projects in technology and software engineering outside of the curriculum
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability
  • Ability to travel internationally for company events

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Upstream open source contributions
  • Packaging and Linux distribution contributions (Debian, Fedora, Arch, Nix, etc.)
  • Leadership and organization skills
  • Presentation and writing abilities
  • Business and commercial interests
