About the Role
The Head of Internal Audit is tasked with leading an independent and objective internal audit function that assures the Board Audit Committee and Executive Management regarding the effectiveness of the governance, risk management, and internal control framework at the company. This critical role involves the development and delivery of a risk-based audit plan aimed at evaluating the adequacy and effectiveness of various controls, including financial, operational, regulatory, technology, and strategic controls across the organization. Additionally, the Head of Internal Audit serves as a trusted advisor, offering insights on emerging risks, regulatory developments, operational resilience, cybersecurity, digital transformation, and business change initiatives.

This role ensures compliance with the Internal Audit Charter, the International Professional Practices Framework (IPPF), and all relevant regulatory requirements while fostering a strong culture of accountability, risk awareness, and continuous improvement throughout the organization.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Board of Directors and Executive Management in meeting their objectives by providing a systematic approach to evaluating, improving, and maintaining the effectiveness of the company's risk management and internal control processes.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to the Board Audit Committee and Executive Management concerning emerging risks, regulatory change, and evolving industry best practices.
  • Challenge the Board and Executive Management to enhance the effectiveness of their governance processes.
  • Conduct organization-wide risk assessments to identify significant risks associated with internal controls, compliance, and operational efficiency. Provide actionable feedback and recommendations for improvement.
  • Develop an annual risk-based internal audit plan for Board Audit Committee review and approval. Oversee its implementation and adjust the plan as necessary based on changes in strategy, business risks, and operations.
  • Provide independent assurance concerning strategic initiatives and technology modernization efforts, ensuring governance, risk management, and regulatory compliance are maintained.
  • Ensure meticulous documentation of all audit work, including plans, testing results, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Coordinate the preparation of Board Audit Committee meeting materials and participate in meetings.
  • Evaluate operations at the request of the Board Audit Committee or Executive Management, as required.
  • Keep abreast of regulatory, legislative, and auditing developments impacting the group, ensuring they influence the audit strategy and methodology.
  • Promote data analytics and continuous auditing techniques to enhance audit coverage and efficiency.
  • Lead the execution of a risk-based technology audit program focused on various digital and technological aspects of banking.
  • Provide assurance over new business activities related to digital assets and fintech partnerships to ensure appropriate risk management.
  • Assess the effectiveness of the Bank's operational resilience framework, including business continuity and incident management.
  • Liaise with external auditors, regulators, and internal compliance functions.
  • Establish departmental objectives aligned with the Group’s goals and formally evaluate team performance.
  • Mentor and coach team members, aiding in their career development.

Qualifications and Experience

  • University degree in Business, Accounting, or a related field.
  • Professional accounting qualification (CPA, CA, ACA or ACCA) is required.
  • An internal audit qualification (e.g. CIA) is preferred.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressive experience in banking or financial services, including at least four (4) years in senior internal audit or financial audit roles.
  • Proven experience presenting to Audit Committees, Boards of Directors, and financial services regulators.
  • Knowledge of banking systems like Temenos T24, NetInfo, Great Plains, and Viewpoint is preferable.
  • Experience in auditing digital banking platforms and fintech services is highly beneficial.
  • Advanced proficiency in spreadsheet development, risk analysis, and financial analysis.
  • Strong ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Capability to work independently and take ownership of tasks.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook.
