We are seeking a highly motivated intern to join the Integrated Photonics & Light Sensing division within DERC. The intern will contribute to two main tracks:

  • Developing AI agents for the automated design and tape-out of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) using commercial and open-source PDKs and software.
  • Designing software pipelines and writing code for the processing, analysis, and visualization of raw LiDAR data.
    This role is ideal for candidates eager to bridge AI and photonics in a research-oriented environment.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop AI models/agents for photonic integrated circuit layout and optimization.
  • Automate design workflows using tools such as KLayout and GDSFactory.
  • Work with both commercial and open-source PDKs for PIC design and tape-out.
  • Develop code for preprocessing, filtering, and visualizing LiDAR data.
  • Handle 3D point cloud data and object detection/classification.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary researchers in photonics, AI, and embedded systems.

Qualification

  • Enrolled in or recently graduated with a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Optics, or a related field.
  • Strong background in machine learning, data science, or signal/image processing.
  • Exposure to photonics design and simulation tools (e.g., COMSOL, Lumerical, GDSFactory, KLayout).
  • Experience in Python.
  • Familiarity with LiDAR systems or 3D sensor data processing is a strong advantage.
  • Excellent analytical, coding, and teamwork skills.
