Each year, we onboard new junior professionals into the Canonical Kernel Team to work on the Linux kernel for Ubuntu. If you have a passion for operating systems, proficiency in writing high-quality C, and a readiness to explore how it all functions, this is an excellent opportunity for your career growth.

Our global team is responsible for shipping the world’s most widely used Linux kernel across the latest silicon and cloud, providing a platform for you to apply and enhance your software engineering skills. The Canonical Kernel Team builds and maintains all supported Ubuntu Linux kernels for various platforms and architectures, from small embedded devices to desktop/server systems and large-scale cloud environments.

Location: Jiddah, Makkah, Saudi Arabia (Remote)
Work Conditions: Full-time, remote with opportunities to travel twice a year for company events

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate proactively with a globally distributed team.
  • Learn from senior mentors about the Linux kernel and its distribution.
  • Work with external silicon, cloud, or hardware manufacturer teams on advanced platforms.
  • Diagnose and resolve kernel issues reported by customers and discovered during testing.
  • Take personal responsibility for delivering various flavors of the Ubuntu Linux kernel.
  • Improve tooling and automation for the testing and delivery of Ubuntu Linux kernels.
  • Submit, review, and apply kernel patches, collaborating with both internal and external upstream maintainers.

Qualifications:

  • Recent university graduates or early-career professionals interested in kernel-level software development.
  • Effective communication skills in English (both written and verbal).
  • Programming experience in C and/or Rust.
  • Familiarity with version control practices, ideally with Git.
  • Understanding of operating system kernel fundamentals.
  • Willingness and ability to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks).

Preferred Skills:

  • Interest and experience in Rust.
  • Proficiency in Python and Bash scripting.
  • Experience with Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging.
  • Understanding of kernel patching and debugging.
  • Strong grasp of device drivers and low-level system engineering.
