As a Junior Linux Kernel Engineer, you will join the Canonical Kernel Team, which builds and maintains all supported Ubuntu Linux kernels across a wide range of platforms and architectures. You will tackle serious initiatives in your first year, including optimized solutions for key Silicon and Cloud partner platforms, enabling Ubuntu on various embedded systems, and expanding driver support for leading-edge PC platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate regularly and proactively with a globally distributed team.
  • Learn from senior mentors and understand the inner workings of the Linux kernel.
  • Work with external teams on bleeding-edge platforms.
  • Resolve kernel issues reported by customers and through rigorous testing.
  • Take responsibility for the delivery of various flavors of the Ubuntu Linux kernel.
  • Improve tools and automation for Ubuntu Linux kernel delivery and testing.
  • Submit, review, and apply kernel patches while working with internal and external maintainers.

Requirements:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English (both written and verbal).
  • Programming experience in C and/or Rust.
  • Familiarity with version control practices, ideally with Git.
  • Understanding of operating system kernel fundamentals.
  • Willingness to travel twice a year for company events of up to two weeks each.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Interest and experience in Rust.
  • Python and Bash scripting skills.
  • Prior experience with Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging.
  • Experience with kernel patching and debugging.
  • Strong grasp of device drivers and low-level system engineering.
