We are looking for new junior professionals to join the Canonical Kernel Team to enhance and work on the Linux kernel for Ubuntu. If you are passionate about operating systems and have experience in writing high-quality code in C (and possibly Rust), this is a great opportunity to advance your career. Our team builds and maintains all supported Ubuntu Linux kernels for various platforms, from small embedded devices to large-scale cloud environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate regularly with a globally distributed team.
  • Learn from senior mentors to understand the Linux kernel.
  • Work closely with external delivery teams on cutting-edge platforms.
  • Diagnose and resolve kernel issues reported by customers and the community.
  • Take personal responsibility for delivering various versions of the Ubuntu Linux kernel.
  • Improve tooling and automation for kernel delivery and testing.
  • Submit, review, and apply kernel patches in collaboration with upstream maintainers.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Well-organized and motivated self-starter, capable of thriving in a remote work environment.
  • Professionalism in communication with colleagues, business partners, and the open-source community.
  • Effective communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
  • Programming experience in C and/or Rust.
  • Familiarity with version control, ideally git.
  • Understanding of operating system kernel fundamentals.
  • Willingness to travel globally twice a year for company events.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Interest and experience in Rust.
  • Python and Bash scripting abilities.
  • Prior experience with Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging.
  • Experience with kernel patching and debugging.
  • Strong knowledge of device drivers, BSPs, and low-level system engineering.
