Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems, most notably the Ubuntu platform. Our solutions are utilized in crucial enterprise initiatives including public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We're seeking recent graduates or early career professionals to join our Canonical Kernel Team, working on the Linux kernel for Ubuntu. Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate closely with a globally distributed team.
  • Learn from senior mentors to understand the Linux kernel's inner workings and its distribution.
  • Work with external silicon, cloud, or hardware manufacturers on cutting-edge platforms.
  • Diagnose and resolve kernel issues reported by customers and the community.
  • Take responsibility for delivering various flavors of the Ubuntu Linux kernel.
  • Improve tools and automation for the delivery and testing of Ubuntu Linux kernels.
  • Submit, review, and apply kernel patches, collaborating with both internal and external maintainers.

Requirements:

  • Well-organized and motivated self-starter who thrives in a remote work environment.
  • Professional demeanor towards colleagues and the open-source community.
  • Proficient in English, both written and verbal.
  • Programming experience in C and/or Rust.
  • Familiarity with version control practices, ideally with git.
  • Understanding of operating system kernel fundamentals.
  • Willingness to travel globally twice a year for company engineering events.

Preferred Skills:

  • Interest and experience in Rust.
  • Programming abilities in Python and Bash scripting.
  • Prior experience with Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging.
  • Experience in kernel patching and debugging.
  • Strong understanding of device drivers and low-level system engineering.
