Lead Backend Engineer - PayLink

About the Role
We are seeking a hands-on engineering lead who will set the technical direction, own code quality, and build payment-critical backend services using a modern Java stack. In this role, you will guide and grow a team of backend engineers, ensuring high performance and reliability in our payment systems.

What You'll Do

• Provide hands-on technical leadership for backend engineering on a modern Java / Spring Boot stack.
• Design and build payment-critical backend services and APIs.
• Own code quality, including standards, code review, testing, and release readiness.
• Ensure correctness, reliability, and security across the services that the team owns.
• Mentor and grow backend engineers, working closely with architecture and product teams.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in Java backend development with strong expertise in Spring Boot.
• Proven technical leadership skills while remaining hands-on in coding tasks.
• Hands-on experience in payments or fintech is required; you must have worked on real payment or financial-transaction systems.
• Experience with at least one payment processor or gateway (e.g., MPGS, Cybersource, or mada) is a requirement for this role.
• Strong understanding of microservices, REST API design, relational databases, and automated testing.
• Proficiency in delivering solutions using containers (Kubernetes) with CI/CD practices.
• Familiarity with AI-augmented engineering; you actively use AI coding tools such as Claude Code in your daily development, which is a requirement for this role.

Nice to Have

• Experience with more than one payment processor or gateway.
• Knowledge of cloud platforms (OCI, AWS, or Azure) and event-driven systems (Kafka).
