We are hiring a Lead Data Governance Engineer focused on the development and implementation of data governance policies, processes, standards, and monitoring in compliance with internal policies and regulatory frameworks (e.g., GDPR, DPA, ISO). The successful candidate will be responsible for creating Python-based tools to automate the operations of an internal data mesh solution, including data labeling and quality metrics, while ensuring data access management and adherence to data security best practices. The Data Governance team operates within the Commercial Systems unit and aims to ensure secure and well-governed access to comprehensive data sets sourced from various internal and external origins within a data mesh framework. The team utilizes well-known open-source data governance tools such as Trino and Ranger, defines, and executes data governance processes, and works to democratize data access at Canonical. Role Responsibilities: - Define, monitor, and execute data governance policies. - Design, implement, and maintain tooling for automated data mesh operations. - Deploy and manage services developed by the team. - Depending on your seniority, mentor and provide career development feedback to colleagues. - Develop and advocate for effective engineering and organizational practices. Qualifications: - Exceptional academic performance with an undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative of an alternative path. - Proven track record of exceeding expectations to achieve outstanding results. - Experience with data quality, governance, and security processes and tools. - Proficient in software development using Python and SQL. - Professional written and spoken English with strong presentation skills. - Results-oriented personal drive to meet commitments. - Ability to travel internationally twice a year for up to two weeks for company events. Nice-to-Have Skills: - Performance engineering and security experience. - Familiarity with Airbyte, Ranger, Superset, Temporal, or Trino.
