Position

The Directed Energy Research Center (DERC) is seeking a highly motivated Lead HW/RF Engineer to join the company and contribute to the development and implementation of a spaceborne SAR payload. This role involves oversight of the electronics/RF architecture and design, guiding the selection of components, elements, and interfaces to meet space system requirements. The Lead HW/RF Engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams (including system, software, mechanical, validation, and AIT) to ensure performance objectives are met from concept through testing to in-orbit operation. This position also requires managing and mentoring a team of junior engineers.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and test necessary elements within the HW/RF chain for Phased Array Antennas, including Transmit-Receive Modules, RF distribution networks, USOs, and Antenna Radiators.
  • Simulate and verify circuit designs to optimize HW instrument performance.
  • Ensure cohesive payload development and alignment with requirements.
  • Formulate and implement a verification plan for HW/RF instrument requirements.
  • Maintain the instrument RF budget and interpret electronic schematics, circuit diagrams, and technical drawings.
  • Guide the digital electronics team to ensure alignment with interfaces and budgets.
  • Contribute to risk assessments, design reviews, and anomaly investigations.
  • Report regularly to the division director and relevant stakeholders.
  • Provide training and mentorship to a team of young engineers in the relevant technical domain.

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in electrical/electronic/RF engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 10 years of practical experience in HW/RF technology for space applications.
  • Skills in signal processing and specific HW units, such as ASICs, FPGAs, PCB design, modulations, and data compression.
  • Familiarity with CST, ALTIUM, SPICE, or CADENCE software tools.
  • Understanding of space qualification processes and environmental testing.
  • Proficient in English, both written and spoken.
