The Canonical Kernel Team is looking for exceptionally talented technology experts with a proven track record in operating systems kernel development or low-level system engineering. The successful candidate will lead the architecture, implementation, and ongoing delivery of various aspects of the Ubuntu Linux kernel, including:
- Driving engagements with key Silicon and Cloud partners to provide optimal solutions for their platforms.
- Leading the mitigation of common vulnerabilities and exposures while enhancing kernel hardening.
- Architecting performance and correctness enhancements to ensure Ubuntu Linux remains highly reliable.
- Streamlining the packaging and distribution of complex third-party components for a better user experience.
- Developing new methods to deliver Ubuntu Linux at scale, meeting strict quality standards and delivery schedules.

While this is not a formal managerial role, the position requires strong interpersonal skills to lead engineers and coordinate across teams effectively. Candidates should possess a deep technical background in operating system kernels and distributions and be proactive in driving initiatives to completion.
Key Responsibilities:
- Set the technical direction and lead a team of junior and mid-career engineers.
- Collaborate with management and other senior technical leaders to coordinate initiatives.
- Ensure Ubuntu maintains its position at the pinnacle of Linux distributions.
What We Are Looking For:
- Well-organized and self-motivated individual who thrives in a remote work environment.
- Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
- Expert understanding of C programming.
- Demonstrated expertise in *nix-based operating system kernels and distributions (Linux experience preferred).
- Python and Bash scripting abilities.
- Familiarity with the capabilities of the git version control system.
- Experience with software packaging formats, ideally with Ubuntu/Debian/Snap.
- Willingness to travel internationally at least twice a year for company events.
Language Requirements:
- Strong communication skills in English (both written and verbal).
Nice-to-Have Skills:
- Background in RTOS and real-time performance analysis.
- Experience with kernel patching and debugging.
- Knowledge of device drivers and low-level system engineering.
- Familiarity with Rust, particularly in relation to the Linux kernel.
