The Canonical Kernel Team is looking for exceptionally talented technology experts and industry veterans with a solid track record in operating systems kernel development or low-level system engineering. The focus will be on leading the architecture, implementation, and ongoing delivery of aspects of the Ubuntu Linux kernel, including:

  • Engaging with key Silicon and Cloud partners to provide optimal solutions for their platforms.
  • Mitigating common vulnerabilities and exposures for Ubuntu Linux while driving kernel hardening.
  • Architecting enhancements to performance and reliability to make Ubuntu Linux the most robust and high-performing Linux kernel available.
  • Streamlining the packaging and distribution of complicated third-party components for an optimal user experience.
  • Developing new means to deliver Ubuntu Linux at scale, adhering to strict quality standards and delivery schedules.

While this is not a formal managerial role, successful candidates will possess strong people skills and a natural ability to lead engineers within their teams, as well as coordinate with external teams for adoption and delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set technical direction and lead the delivery of a team of junior and mid-career engineers for a key aspect of Ubuntu Linux.
  • Collaborate closely with management and senior technical leadership to track and coordinate initiatives.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Well-organized and motivated self-starter able to thrive in a remote work environment.
  • Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
  • Expert understanding of the C programming language.
  • Demonstrated expertise in a *nix-based operating system kernel and distribution; direct Linux experience is preferred but not required.
  • Proficiency in Python and Bash scripting.
  • Strong grasp of the git version control system.
  • Experience with software packaging formats, with a preference for direct Ubuntu/Debian/Snap experience.
  • Willingness to travel internationally at least twice a year for company events lasting up to two weeks.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Background in RTOS and real-time performance analysis.
  • Experience with kernel patching and debugging.
  • Knowledge of device drivers, BSPs, and low-level system engineering.
  • Familiarity with Rust, particularly as it pertains to the Linux kernel.
