Position

The Directed Energy Research Center is seeking a highly motivated Lead Software Engineer to join the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) and contribute to the development and implementation of a spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payload. This role involves leading a software team responsible for designing, implementing, testing, and maintaining on-board and ground software/firmware components required for instrument operations, data acquisition, and performance monitoring. The Lead Software Engineer will also be responsible for managing and mentoring junior engineers.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Define software architecture in alignment with system-level requirements and mission objectives.
  • Oversee the development of on-board embedded software for instrument control, data handling, and telemetry.
  • Coordinate the development of ground support software/firmware for integration, testing, and operational monitoring.
  • Ensure compliance with space industry standards and mission-specific operational requirements.
  • Collaborate with system engineers, hardware designers, and mission operations teams to ensure seamless integration and functionality.
  • Develop and maintain software verification and validation plans, including automated testing frameworks.
  • Implement and oversee end-to-end encryption protocols for satellite telemetry, tracking, command (TT&C), and payload data.
  • Manage software configuration control, documentation, and versioning.
  • Support anomaly investigations and contribute to software updates during the operational phase of the mission.
  • Provide training and mentorship to a team of young engineers in the relevant technical domain.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in software engineering, computer science, or a similar field.
  • At least 10 years of practical experience in software development.
  • Proven experience in leading software development teams, preferably in aerospace or high-reliability environments.
  • Strong proficiency in programming languages such as C/C++, Python, Verilog/VHDL, and embedded systems development.
  • Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS), software testing, and version control systems (e.g., Git).
  • Familiarity with space mission software standards and protocols, such as the ECSS and CCSDS.
  • Excellent leadership and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in English, both written and spoken.
