Position

Canonical is a leading provider of open-source software and operating systems, with its platform Ubuntu extensively used in enterprise initiatives such as cloud computing, data science, AI, and IoT. The company promotes global collaboration, employing over 1200 colleagues across 75+ countries, with a focus on remote roles. Canonical is founder-led, profitable, and continually growing. The company is expanding its Linux Kernel team, which is responsible for all supported Ubuntu Linux kernels across various platforms and architectures—from embedded devices to supercomputers. Key responsibilities include hardware enablement, security, reliability, and performance improvements.

What the Role Entails:

  • Collaborate with a globally distributed team.
  • Work with external silicon, cloud, or hardware manufacturers on innovative platforms.
  • Diagnose and solve kernel issues reported by customers and the community.
  • Take personal responsibility for delivering an Ubuntu Linux kernel flavor.
  • Enhance tooling and automation for kernel delivery and testing.
  • Submit, review, and apply kernel patches while collaborating with maintainers.

Required Qualifications:

  • Significant programming experience in C; familiarity with Python, Golang, or similar languages is advantageous.
  • Experience with operating system kernel internals; familiarity with Linux is preferred but not essential.
  • Strong background with git and Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
  • Professional proficiency in written and spoken English, with excellent presentation skills.
  • Willingness to travel twice a year for company events.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of device drivers, BSPs, and low-level system engineering.
  • Previous experience with software packaging formats, especially Ubuntu/Debian/Snap.
  • Knowledge of Linux kernel upstream processes and the release cycle.
  • Performance engineering and security expertise.
  • Experience in CI/CD and process automation.
  • Prior public involvement with open-source projects.
